Today’s AI in imaging technology is very well understood and developed, but to fully embrace AI for electron microscopy imaging, several hardware technological breakthroughs need to happen in electron optics system design. 

 

1) Image quality consistency from session to session and from system to system. Otherwise, an AI model that works well for today might not work well for tomorrow, an AI model that works well for one system might not work well for another system.

2) Only high throughput electron microscopy imaging can speed up bio sample digitization that is needed to speed up AI model training.

 

Borries is super focused and has made these electron optics hardware technology breakthroughs.

 

1) Very large field of view (FOV) 500um x 500um with ~1nm resolution. Eliminated all the time wasted on stage movement and image stitching.

2) Instant change of magnification (in millisecond) and without losing sight of interest enables fast screening and diagnostics.

3) Eliminate the need for electron optics alignment adjustment produce consistent image parametric qualities.

4) Future multiple column electron optics system design allows sample parallel processing to further enhance the sample throughput.
